WIS Centres: NCs, DCPCs and GISCs
There are three types of WIS Centres: National Centres (NCs), Data Collection or Production Centres (DCPCs), and Global Information System Centres (GISCs).
With the start of the operational phase of WIS2 in 2025, the role of WIS Centres has evolved from what originally was outlined in the Manual on WIS, Volume I. WIS centres shall now comply with the technical regulations defined in the Manual on WIS, Volume II.
National Centres and Data Collection or Production Centres collect data, generate content and deliver services through the operation of their WIS2 Nodes.
Global Information System Centres (GISCs) are responsible for the support of NCs and DCPCs in their Area of Responsibility and ensure the smooth operation of the data exchange within the WIS2 network
The Designation Procedures for WIS Centres can be found on Manual on WIS, Volume I, Part II, Page 16
A WIS Centre (NC/DCPC) wishing to change its principal GISC must first consult with both its current and proposed principal GISCs and obtain the agreement of the proposed GISC. The centre must then submit a formal letter, endorsed by the Permanent Representative with WMO. This letter should clearly indicate the proposed new principal GISC and include confirmation of endorsement from that GISC.
